6 Telltale Signs That It Is Time to Sell Your Home

All good things come to an end, and that, unfortunately, includes your home. Most people do not plan to live in their first houses forever, but knowing when to post their house on sale can get tricky.

To some, it can feel like breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Deep down, you know that you wouldn’t be with that person forever, but ending it is easier said than done. Just like a relationship, there are signs to tell you that it is time to let go.
Here are six telltale signs that it is time to sell your home:

1. Feeling Cramped and Cannot Add On

You and your family may not be growing, but that won’t mean your lifestyle will stay the same. You may have recently adopted a family of cats, or maybe you’re still dreaming of creating that man-cave, or perhaps the home is just too small. You need to move on.

Before you find yourself a realtor, however, try and sell some of your possessions in an attempt to free up some space. You can finish the attic or the basement, add a new room, or add a whole story. Of course, this will not work for everyone. To help you decide which option you should take, check with local building regulations, and get estimates from a couple of contractors.

Sometimes, adding to the home won’t increase its value, so don’t make significant investments that have little to no returns.

2. Too Much Space

Quite the opposite of the first sign, if you feel your house is too vacant and silent, it is probably time to say goodbye.

If you find it difficult to leave, here are some considerations to help you make your decision. If your house is hard to upkeep, your yard challenging to maintain, and utility bills soaring through the roof, it makes sense to find a new place.

3. Done Dealing with the Neighborhood

Maybe it’s the strict rules placed down by your homeowner’s association, or perhaps it’s your neighbours banging on their drums every single evening. Whatever the reason you may have, neighbourhoods will change over time.

You’ll have to change too. In the beginning, that one hour commute to work didn’t seem like a big hassle, but now you wish you were closer.

You may dread change, but sometimes, changes happen for the better, and that includes moving to a new home.

4. Remodelling Doesn’t Add value

If you’re bored with how your house looks, a quick renovation can help you stay for a few years longer. Unfortunately, it may not always be the best thing to do. If your home is already in the same condition as the most expensive homes in the neighbourhood, remodelling is a no-no. Sell your home instead.

5. You Can Afford to Sell

It takes money to make money. What this means is that you may have to spend some money renovating your home or surroundings before you can get a reasonable price. Because of this, make sure that you have an excellent back-up plan before you start, such as a pool of money saved in an account.

6. Ready to Compete

If you’re part of a seller’s market, you may rush to sell your home before the hype dies down. But remember, once you sell, you may end up becoming the buyer. Because of this, make sure you’re ready when you get out there to compete.

With the tips we’ve given, we hope that you’ve found a good enough reason to head for a new place. All the best in selling your home and finding yourself a better one!
