Crime Stoppers Windsor & Essex County will be among many groups running at the 40th Annual Detroit Free Press Marathon, this Sunday, October 15th, 7 am sharp! The Cris Kambouris Real Estate Team is honored to be this year’s Team Sponsor. “This was a perfect fit for me as I have many connections on both sides of the border and love the grassroots approach Crime Stoppers takes to crime prevention. They need awareness, and I look forward to being more involved in the future.”
This marathon is an international event as the runners will travel through both Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Other events taking place this weekend are the Marathon Relay, Disabilities Division, International Half-Marathon, US-Only Half Marathon, American Home Fitness 5K and Meijer Kids Fun Run. About Crime Stoppers Windsor & Essex County
Since 1985, Windsor & Essex County Crime Stoppers became a driving force in preventing crime in our community. The local organization has been awarded the Marla Moon Award of Excellence many times for the best Crime Stoppers program in Ontario (over 200,000 population). It has also received several awards from the Ontario Crime Control Commission. The program has been awarded as well for productivity, media, and social media excellence. The Board of Windsor & Essex County Crime Stoppers, Inc. consists of a maximum of 25 volunteers. The responsibility of the Board of Directors is to set the policies for the operation of the program and to raise money from the community to pay rewards and cover administrative costs.
Crime Stoppers Programs are not for profit and funded by private donations and fundraising. Rewards for tips are paid by the program and only offered to encourage reluctant callers to provide information. Another incentive is that tips are anonymous. Your conversations are not recorded, and no caller ID technology is used. Tips are then passed to the investigating officer. Another option to providing anonymous tips is online, powered by Anderson Software, the world’s leading online tip solution provider. This technology allows the tipster to return and provide additional information to their tip at any time, but also provides a secure means for the coordinator to ask questions or provide reward information back to the tipster through the same secure and encrypted interface.
Crime Stoppers really works! Since it’s inception, thousands of arrests and recovery of property have been made. They have been accepted by the public as a more pleasant alternative to traditional methods of giving information and by the police as a valid and effective investigative tool. Crime Stoppers Windsor & Essex County proudly finished #316 out of 541 teams who participated in the 2017 Detroit Free Press Relay Marathon. Police Coordinator, Cst. Amanda Allen was the only returning member of the 2016 team. This year, she was joined by 4 new team members, Raven Bickford, Mohamed Susa, Tyler Ceballo and Amber Thibert, who were all first-time Relay Marathon participants. “They completely enjoyed the experience, are all committed to returning in 2018 and possibly even trying the ½ Marathon in the future!” said Cst. Allen. “Thank you to our runners and to Cris Kambouris for donating the great shirts to the program. His donation saved Crime Stoppers Windsor & Essex County the funds it would cost purchase them and acted as a “running billboard”, bringing more awareness of our program to our neighboring community.”
