On April 30, 2019, The Cris Kambouris Real Estate team partnered with Meridian Credit Union to participate in an amazing Habitat for Humanity Windsor Essex project! Along with my wife Nancy and assistant, Janine, we proudly represented Team Cris Kambouris on site. We were responsible for clearing out old drywall and cleaning up. We assisted further by screwing in the new drywall and prepared the painting crew by taping. All in all, it was a fun day and very satisfying knowing we were helping a local family and charity that is a worthy cause. Read on for some information about the project I participated in: Build #65 on St. Luke.
Habitat for Humanity: Build #65 (1486 St. Luke, Windsor’s Ford City
The project at 1486 St Luke, Windsor is part of a larger strategy to “Build Ford City.” (https://www.habitatwindsor.org/buildingfordcity.html) This build, the first of five homes to be built in the area, is on land donated by, Gerald Chevalier, a lifetime Windsor resident. The property we participated in at 1486 St. Luke is being built to support a family whose daughter lives with severe disabilities. Their current rental home is not accessible and does not support her needs. Currently, their daughter is sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
Habitat for Humanity: History
Rewind to the 1970s on a farm in Georgia, Clarence Jordan, farmer, founder and biblical scholar joined later founders, Millard and Linda Fuller to develop the concept of “partnership housing for those who need adequate shelter, who would work with volunteers to build decent and affordable homes for no profit.
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International movement has grown to include 70 countries, including Canada in 1985, where just two years later, Winnipeg became Habitat for Humanity local office and the first home was built in Winkler, Manitoba. Habitat Canada now has 56 locations represented in every Canadian province and territory.
Habitat for Humanity: Helping to Break the Cycle of Poverty!
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, faith-based organization that embodies a vision of a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. They hope to break the cycle of poverty in Windsor Essex by promoting home ownership, doing their part by partnering with families to build decent, affordable and safe homes families can call their own. Their home models are offered to partner families at a zero interest mortgage, geared to their income. This allows families in these situations to build equity for their future.
Habitat for Humanity: Ways to Donate
In the first 25 years, Habitat for Humanity has recorded over 10 million volunteer hours building over 2000 homes for low income, Canadian families. Here are some ways to donate (https://www.habitatwindsor.org/ways-to-donate.html), whether you choose your time or money.
